Five Key Insights
- A small handful of large investors control the vast majority of impact assets. In our survey sample, 28% of investors hold 93% of reported impact AUM, and the median investor manages $162 million USD against a mean of $1.4 billion USD. But there’s a role for investors of every size: the largest players contribute capital at scale, while smaller investors are often more innovative in their strategies.
- Satisfaction has held steady despite reported headwinds. 91% of respondents are satisfied with impact performance and 71% with financial performance, both flat vs. 2025. Meanwhile, 92% cite the economic outlook as a challenge.
- Over the past year, public equity allocations fell while private market allocations grew. Among 173 repeat respondents, public equity allocations fell 44% (–$35.1B), while real assets, private debt, private equity and public debt grew. Private equity and private debt hold 52% of surveyed impact AUM.
- North America saw the biggest long-term gain of any region. North American allocations grew $45.7B among 2019–2026 repeat respondents.
- The share of respondents planning to adopt AI rose from 53% to 92% in two years. Planned uses are mainly operational: efficiency (82%) and due diligence and sourcing (67%), vs. 13% planning to invest in AI-first investees. (The 2024 and 2026 figures come from different respondent groups.)
This year’s data raises important questions for the field. Who shapes a market where capital is this concentrated? Why does investor interest in emerging markets still outpace actual allocations? And how might new technologies ultimately change the way investors make decisions, interpret outcomes and allocate capital?
Answering them will take persistent effort from the whole ecosystem: asset owners willing to allocate to impact, managers who can translate impact ambitions into investable strategies, credible and integrated approaches to impact measurement and management, and conditions that make it easier for new investors to enter. This report is offered not simply as a measure of how large impact investing has become, but as evidence the community can learn from, and an invitation to help shape what comes next.
