AFIG Funds is a private equity fund management company domiciled in Mauritius and headquartered in Dakar, Senegal, with USD 252m in assets under management. AFIG Funds invests across 32 countries in West, Central, and East Africa through two vehicles: Fund I (2008 vintage for Class A shares and 2013 vintage for class D shares) and Fund II (2016 vintage). Our strategy is to invest in the underserved middle market, supporting local entrepreneurs to develop local African companies into regional and global leaders. We believe there is tremendous opportunity to earn alpha by providing local entrepreneurs with not only capital, but also strategic, operational, and governance support, which many of them otherwise do not readily have access to. In this way, we feel we are helping strengthen the fabric of the local business environment as well as making returns. We are sector agnostic, though we tend to favor financial services, agribusiness, fast-moving consumer goods, and light industrial/manufacturing. We write checks of USD 10 to 20 million for minority equity stakes, as well as via a wide range of quasi-equity instruments including mezzanine and convertible debt, though we are able to work with others, especially our LPs, to invest greater total check sizes. Today, AFIG Funds’ investors are among the top and most experienced LPs investing in Africa, including development finance institutions and commercial investors from Africa, Europe, and the US. These include the African Development Bank, CDC, IFC, European Investment Bank, Old Mutual, PineBridge, and Swedfund, among others.
