Why focus on climate mitigation?
Our primary focus currently is on climate mitigation rather than adaptation. While adaptation and resilience are essential for coping with the current and future impacts of climate change and further work is required there, too, the GIIN has decided to focus on mitigation thus aiming to address the underlying cause by actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By prioritizing mitigation, we aim to prevent further environmental damage and decrease the necessity for adaptation measures in the future. This proactive approach allows us to tackle the problem at its source, ensuring that our efforts have lasting and far-reaching effects on stabilizing the climate.
Focusing on climate solutions is where GIIN can be most effective in achieving long-term sustainability. These solutions encompass technologies and practices that directly tackle the source of greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it drives systemic change by transforming our energy, transportation, agricultural and industrial systems to be more sustainable and resilient.
Objectives of the initiative
The Climate Solutions Investing Initiative focuses on three pivotal objectives:
- Mobilization of Capital: Driving substantial investments into climate solutions to meet climate goals effectively and timely.
- Tools for Investors: Equipping asset owners with the necessary resources to assess and prioritize the most viable climate solutions strategies.
- Education: Highlighting investment opportunities that are central to climate solutions.
Key activities
To achieve its ambitious goals, the CSI will engage in a multifaceted approach:
- Creating a Framework: In June 2025, we published the Climate Solutions Investing Framework, which focuses on assisting asset owners to engage effectively with managers to assess and prioritize sufficient climate solutions portfolios – those that are most likely to help us a achieve a low-carbon economy grounded in science and viable pathways.
- Holding Investor Alignment / Forums: Convening an annual Climate Solutions Investing Forum, the first of which was held in September 2025, to enhance understanding, increase peer learning and tackle under-served areas within the climate solutions space.
- Launching a Global Effort: Spearheading a vigorous engagement effort to accelerate action and raise awareness about impactful climate solutions investing. This includes case studies highlighting early applications of the framework and a pilot group to test and refine its use in practice.
Collaboration across networks
The Climate Solutions Investing Initiative is committed to fostering robust partnerships across a diverse community of investors, solutions providers, and other key actors in the climate space. By aligning our efforts with other influential networks, we aim to create a synergistic impact that accelerates the deployment of critical climate solutions globally.
Climate Solutions Investing Advisory Committee (CSIAC)
CSIAC members are appointed by the GIIN based on their ability to contribute expertise and leadership in the climate solutions investing practice. The CSIAC members reflect the climate solutions investment chain – pension funds, insurers, family offices, asset managers, Limited Partners, General Partners and NGOs in total and are drawn from a range of geographies.
