Vijay Advani retired as Executive Chairman of Nuveen, the investment manager of TIAA, at the end of 2020, after having served as Chief Executive Officer of the firm from 2017-2020. He was responsible for Nuveen’s overall strategy and growth with a focus on the firm’s three key initiatives: impact and ESG investing; the development of Nuveen Labs; and growing Nuveen’s business and investment capabilities outside of the U.S.
While CEO of Nuveen, the firm’s assets under management grew 14% to over $1 trillion, it achieved industry-leading organic sales growth (7.1% in 2019), while also significantly expanding its global footprint in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada. Vijay streamlined the company’s global operating model, helping achieve significant cost savings, while expanding Nuveen’s retail business with assets growing at a 12% compound annual growth rate, while also creating and shaping an industry-leading brand by combining more than a dozen investment affiliates under the Nuveen banner.
Before joining Nuveen in 2017, Vijay was Co-President of Franklin Templeton Investments, where in a career of more than 20 years, he was responsible for long-term strategic initiatives, M&A, and the firm’s investment management, trading and global retail and institutional channels. Prior to joining Franklin Templeton, Vijay spent 11 years at the World Bank advising governments on developing their financial markets and arranging equity, quasi-equity, and debt financing.
Vijay is a board member of BowX (a SPAC), and served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute (ICI). He also serves on the Boards of the U.S. - India Business Council (USIBC) and the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). He is also an advisory board member for The Hive Incubator in Palo Alto, charter member of TiE Silicon Valley and past board member of the U.S. - India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) at the University of Pennsylvania, FCLTGlobal, Jumpstart and Lok Foundation. Vijay is a committee member of the San Francisco-Bangalore Sister City Initiative, and the Investment Committee at Santa Clara University (SCU).
He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mumbai and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
